Welcome to our site

We’re Hackney Living Streets – a borough branch of the national charity ‘Living Streets’ (formerly the Pedestrian Association). Our group is made up of active local residents, traders, public realm professionals and campaigners living from Shoreditch and Dalston to Stamford Hill and Hackney Wick.

We campaign actively for safer, more attractive and sociable streets, parks and spaces that will inspire people to want to get around by foot and to spend more time enjoying life out and about in the borough. We also promote the legitimate rights of children and young people to play and hang-out in our public realm – an essential part of enjoying childhood that’s also fundamental to the process of developing into responsible members of the community.

We meet regularly with those council officers and elected members responsible for our streets to discuss public realm improvement schemes and the things that we think need to be done to create better conditions for walking and street life. We also provide support and advice to individuals and resident groups campaigning for changes to their neighbourhoods. In all of our campaigning activities we’re able to draw on the support of the huge network of contacts our members have with everyone from other Hackney based community groups right the way up to national government departments.

You can read more about our campaigns and the public space improvement schemes we’re currently being consulted on around our site.

If you’re interested in getting involved, have an idea about an improvement you’d like to see in your area, or would just like support for a cause you’re working on – we’d love to here from you. You can find more information about how to contact us here.

We hope you enjoy using our site.
